With that said, I want whatever I install to be able to use almost everything in the Kali toolset. Debian may be what I go with because of this, but I'll look into Gentoo.

Debian is the best, in my opinion.

I left my other computers back at my house when I moved into my dorm. Right now I have that N150 I brought to Defcon and an Alienware M14x.

Nice old laptop. I actually don't mind some old things, very classical. As for the OS, definitely don't stick Kali on it. Kali is kind of "heavy", without a better word to describe it, and you will be a bit disappointed with those specs.

@Oni, seems like there's a new Alienware series now. Maybe you could check it out.

Nice one Smile
Reminds me about the IBM I have up stairs (desktop), with 40 MB HDD, and 512 MB of RAM

There is. But, it's Alienware. Next time I buy a laptop, it will probably be from Origin PC.

Hmm, nice, not too fancy, going for more performance?

Specs aren't too bad. But I've always hated the build quality that HP sends out. Terrible plastic.
