[Must Read] How To Critique Users Artwork [Guide] #1
Hello users of DiverseBox and a special hello to the community within this subforum. I am doing this thread to prevent any spam or LQ posting among peoples artwork and to provide a helpful guide to giving constructed criticism and compliments without coming off rude or ignorant. Here are some steps to help you come up with a more accurate rating!

Step 1: Observing the artwork at first glance.
• Understand the concept
• Read any additional information about the piece before judging it. (i.e first time making something/newbies, unfinished work)
• Identify the programs used and the complication of the piece. How hard did the artist work on the piece? Was it thrown together quickly? Is it simple for a reason?

Step 2: Determining the color scheme (Blend)

• Identify the shade of the piece (dark or light)
• Are there multiple colors in the work? Does it all blend and flow together?
• Is it too bright or too dark to comprehend?
• Does it all balance out?
Step 3: Identifying objects/renders (if available)

• Is the size of the render/object appropriate for the dimensions of the artwork?
• Does the render/object take away from the color scheme or factor the appearance of the piece in a negative way?
• Is it too dark or light for the color scheme?
• Does it make a bold statement or is it not necessary in the artwork?

Step 4: Summing up the steps to give an accurate rating

• Work should be criticized often, but not for a non-valid reason or to be rude. If you criticize a piece, a solution should follow it immediately.
• When receiving criticism, refrain from taking offense.
• Criticism should be followed by a #/10 rating based on the summary using the steps.

Hopefully this guide will help prevent LQ ratings and lack of advice to the artist.

I read through all of it, but I have to disagree with one thing. This part:

Quote:• Criticism should be followed by a #/10 rating based on the summary using the steps.

From my perspective as an artist/designer as well, I absolutely hate numerical ratings. I believe it does not help the maker in any way, so why do it? Numerical ratings are only well used in group battles such as tag battles where the judges rate their artwork, but even then the judges rate it on a scale of 100.

I like the thread, but I just don't like that one line. Good job though.

I agree to an extent. I never use ratings in that style, I just give my criticism. However, I think it would help people who are just starting out to see where they are in other peoples eyes and to see themselves improve numerically. Just a theory- I should have been more specific in the OP.

I feel like this should be a little more in depth. Like addressing certain things, and not just looking at colors or the focal points. There's a lot more factors that many people should look at, even if they aren't some graphics expert, for example like balance. Does it look like there's way more to one side than on the other? And more things like that.

I believe I covered that in the Color scheme section aka Step 2. It would fall under the blend of the work, or the flow.

"Is the size of the render/object appropriate for the dimensions of the artwork?" <- That's not the same thing as balance.

Nor does it fall under blend. Everything can blend easily, if you wanted it too. But it doesn't mean it's all balanced out evenly. Balance is like the Rule of Thirds.

Yes I know, I didn't go completely in depth about it, at least not yet but it is there.

"• Does it all balance out?"

I'll update the OP more tomorrow to make it more detailed.
