Do it! I'd really like to see which members are within range. If we see trends we might even be able to do a bigger gathering.

I like the sound of this! Plus, you don't have to join in if you don't want to. You'll see the members who are actually interested in meet ups.

I felt like SL once had a record of the countries people were from as a sort of country count.

Countries is still a bit broad for meetups.. Like for instance, I'm in Seattle, which is quite a bit away from Oni. I'm looking for trends like groups of members within 100mi of each other.

I agree, even state is too broad realistically, since half of the US states are big enough to be countries.

You mean Texas and Alaska? Alaska is almost the size of the rest of the US. It would also be interesting to do some statistics on it to map different types of interests and whatnot.

It worked based on geo-IP (which is not terribly accurate but that was the point after all), and I'm not sure if members are too keen on sharing that information with me Tongue

More than those two, but primarily those xD

That sounds like a decent suggestion actually. Then members could consider events close by like Comic Con or whatever where they could meet.

Make a simple PHP script that prompts them to share location data, geocode it, and then call it good. An IP address doesn't mean anything, if a member is too scared to share it, they probably don't know a whole lot about tech.

Surely, if they're too scared to share it, they wouldn't want anyone to meet them in person?

Or, for added security, users can just opt in on the usercp, and we can write up a script that geocodes based on site wide tracking.

That sounds even better. I'm guessing Dismas would need to see this.

@"Dismas" What do you think?

The original script asked for their username, took their IPv4 address, queried an API for information about it, got the approximate location, and added it to the map. I was having alot of issues with there being no city so it just plotted the exact center of the country. In those cases, I went in and manually mapped it.
