No other forum charges this much for upgrades and their sites have like 0% downtime and they are doing just fine.

Working as little as two days at most places gets you more than that, as does learning a skill and putting it to good use; which is the purpose of any online board out there.
Given, however, the scenario you lack the funds this instant, and cannot pull yourself up and get them; there's no requirement for people to upgrade. You can have a 'free' account and still have a great time on here. Join groups, make properly written posts, and I guarantee you'll get more out of SL than most upgraded members.
