His death is certainly very suspicious and need to be investigated by a neutral team. There is some thing more sinister to this. I doubt whether the truth will ever be out. RIP to departed soul.

It works the same way as with disabling wifi/mobile data, the only thing bad about this is that while you are in "plane mode" you can't receive calls, sms messages.
