I think you've nailed It right here.

During their (Edge) latter stage, I remember It was taking some 3-5 months before they reverse engineered a given AV. In the beginning, It was only a few weeks and sometimes a lot less.

This is the reason I'm currently in the market for an andriod. I've always used iOS for phones, but after months and months of waiting for a jailbreak to see it basically won't happen, I've given in. I remember Jailbreaking my iphone 4 years ago and I'd have the latest jailbreak shortly after the latest update, which is simply not the case anymore.

That's because the A4 chips had a hardware vulnerability (3 of them to be precise), so jailbreaks just required us to patch a couple things out of the kernel, took maybe 10 hours to do (and we would usually do it with the GM beta). Rather than waiting for someone else to do it, why don't you get involved and try and make one yourself? I'm happy to provide some of my ios 10 and 11 material for you to look over.

I started up an iPad i used to use that was jailbroken just to see what was up with some of the iOS only stuff. Opening Cydia I saw just how many repositories were dead. It really hurts.

I think a lot of it also came from the sheer amount of work the Chinese teams were doing to steal any given exploit, but also search for them on their own. That's when I think most of the big names in the jailbreak community left us.

Now we're just kinda stuck. I don't think its entirely dead but it is definitely dying.

TaiG were some of the coolest people I've ever met. iOS jailbreaking went from the one-off exploits (that still work for Android) and turned into these massive 20-25 exploit chains, so the teams just ran out of free time. This stuff is still totally possible (and still done by select groups), but it takes so long that it's not worth releasing and burning a dev exploit.

The thing is, with all the new features and 3rd party app stores, people seem to care less about jailbreaking.
Also, I know some people who are convinced that the chance of bricking a phone while jailbraking is >80%

That's garbage. The risk of jailbreaking a phone is, has been, and will always be 0%

I agree, but these are the same people who think hacking means typing random things into a green terminal window.

I agree, when first iPhones/iPads were in circulation they lacked features and customization.
Which led to people wanting to jailbreak their devices (I was there as well). Especially that it was pretty easy to do.
As iOS developed, it was adopting best features from cydia in parallel it got more secure as well.

So there is no real need for 3rd party apps and tweaks anymore. Repos are dying. Jailbreak is difficult.
It all comes to a logical unwrapping of events...
