Hello all,

We're a gaming forum. At least half the forum is dedicated to it at least. For all you PC gamers out there, I'm gonna show you how to save a few bucks and create your own Vent server on a windows OS.

If you don't know what a Vent server is, it's "Ventrilo". Commonly used as Voip for MMO players. More information can be found here:

So, let's get to business.

1. Download the WINDOWS Ventrilo server client. I suppose this tutorial would be remotely similar on a Linux distribution too, let's just stick to windows though as it's most common in the house.

2. Follow the installer directions

It's very simple. You can do it!

3. Run it

Once the installer is complete. Go to your start orb and run, "Ventrilo Server". A box like this should appear.

Be sure you allow the program through your firewall, otherwise it will not work.

4. Port forwarding

In order for external connections to work, you will need to forward ports in your router. If you do not know how to do this. There are many tutorials on Google and Youtube on how to do this. It varies per router.

Anyway, when you forward it, it needs to be directed to the computer that your vent server is hosted on. In order for you to do that you must locate the Ipv4 of your device. An IPV4 is essentially a local IP address. You can do this by,

Running CMD
Typing "ipconfig"

5. Configuration

Now for the cool part. You get to configure your vent server any way you want. You can do this by doing the following.

Go to your start orb and click all programs. After this, find "VentSrv". It should look like this:

Click, "Edit INI File".

Key Explanations:

Name: Whatever you want your server to be named

Auth:
“0″ Anyone can connect (Public Server)
“1″ Users must have the global password.
“2″ Only pre-configured user accounts can connect to the server.

AdminPassword: This is important. You need to set this so when connected to your server you can configure the basic settings. Make this something only you know.

Nothing else is SUPER important to get your server up and running.

In order for people to connect to you, you will have to give them your IP address. As an alternative, you can setup a DNS with http://www.No-ip.org

I hope my tutorial was worth it for you guys. This should be a fun project for any of you who are into PC gaming. Perhaps one day we can create a Creative Gaming Vent Server.
