Thank you for posting your very detailed tutorial.
Some have mentioned Truecrypt a few times and it is great but ensure that if you use Truecrypt you never leave it mounted, even if you have a "hidden" container, be advised that when mounted those keys are in memory and can be very easily obtained.
As far as VPN's, be sure to do your research before using any specific VPN , even if the VPN provider says they do not keep logs, they can start keeping logs very easily. Some say they keep logs for days, others years and some say they don't keep logs at all. If they are served with some "special" court order from some "secret" court, they can start logging and not tell you or anyone anything, as they would more than likely be gagged by the court order. It is good to know what country or regional (EU) laws the VPN provider is bound to as well as their past relationship/history with law enforcement and the likes.
