This topic is about the title. Today, for the second time ever, I was told that the word is rude. The first time was by some elderly lady so I just assumed it was a whatever thing, but someone a few years older than me also called it rude and I was shocked. Anyone ever been in a situation like this ? I'm not even sure how it's rude tbh

Well everyone uses it, but as I was growing up I was taught it was impolite, adults would always say "Hay is for horses".

I'm from Canada as well and have never offended somebody by saying 'hey'. Everyone says it over here.

I was emailing an old prof back and forth and he was using hey to respond, but he is fairly young. It must be a generational thing

I've heard the saying "Hay is for horses," but I don't see why the word would be rude.
I use it all the time. No one tells me anything.

Depending on how It's used and who It's used against at the time, Â It's more so disrespectful than anything else.
For example, If you wish to speak with your boss and shout out "Hey" as opposed to calmly approaching with "Peter" (obviously being his name), the former (hey) can be frowned upon. It's human nature to demonstrate respect to those who address you by name and not by some figure.
