Backups are one of the most common overlooked control. I'm just as guilty of it as the next person.

I've had hard-drives fail in the past (although never had another person wreck it). Generally why I use Dropbox to keep family pictures, etcetera. It sucks to lose files and reinstall games. Hope the "asshat" covers a replacement at least.

I had my 5 year old WD Black fail with little to no warning. I keep regular backups now.

it's happened before, it'll probably happen again. I'm thinking of investing in either a nice Seagate or a large-ish SSD to minimize the chances of it happening because of impact damage.

Hence I always keep redundant backups of all data.
I've had a couple of HDDs fail (external), and If It wasn't for my other external drives containing the backups, I would've lost "years" of work. In terms of data recovery and diagnostics, checkout my site here: http://www.thepc.tech/
All tools (which are normally paid versions) are free and fully functional- with direct links without the BS of surveys, popups etc.

I'm sorry. I would shit my pants if that happened. I literally have everything I need and that's important to my life saved on this computer over the years and not once ever backed it up (yeah, fuck me, right?).
