Hard drive got fucked

Some asshat in one of my classes this morning wasn't paying attention and knocked my laptop off of a meter-high lab bench. Screen immediately blacked out and system diagnostics wouldn't recognize that the drive was even installed. That was 6 months of programming work, all my school assignments, exams, and documents since grade 9, my resumé, and all my references.

I've looked into getting it recovered (and I hope to God it's just the RW head that got messed up), but I'm still completely in shock that I might end up losing everything. Even if the recovery works, I'm not at all excited to pay the $500 Sad

6 months is a shit load of work and I wouldn't know what to do if I've lost that much of my work.

I'm fucking kicking myself for that, because I was meaning to for months but kept putting it off for some stupid reason.

Yeah, I plan on making her cover at least half the bill if I get my data back. We are (maybe were now) kinda friends, so I know she wouldn't do it on purpose and I hate asking people for cash, but $500 is a lot of money I don't have.

That sucks man, I remembered when all my hard drives crashed. It really sucked, I lost about 60% of my data. The rest I was able to (partly) restore. If you're lucky you're hard drive is still partly intact and your study materials & other important files are saved!

I hope you don't have an android phone, avoid using gmail, and utilize an alternative search engine as well then.

If you're that afraid of the Google Overlords, there are alternatives as well. I can tell you plenty of first hand experiences in both my professional and personal life where utilizing google drive has saved my ass.

I have an android phone, don't use any google products except for AOSP, and I use DuckDuckGo.
