The title says it loud and clear, is host gator worth it? Should you recommend it to anyone and why?

For a small site sure, but for a site that's going to be getting a lot of traffic, or may have a lot of security problems..no.

Unless your site is getting like 50-125 members at a time, yes. If it more than 250, no.

It's good for starting up but once you get up to as much traffic as DZ has you'd be best off with a VPS.

I'd recommend them x100. Nothing bad to say about them.
They say "unlimited" but as you probably know it isn't true. They do offer dedicated servers and plans for high traffic sites, but I haven't tried those products myself. I can only speak for their shared hosting which was perfect.
