Greed #1
Is greed really such a bad thing? Sure, it may cause the wealthy to withhold help toward the poor, or a man to rob a store for his own personal gain. But, it's also the same thing that causes people to help due to wanting to feel good about themselves, feel like they've helped the world. Without Greed, no one would want to help because they'd feel no personal gain. Whether or not you believe it is kindness, it is merely greed. I for one love Greed as a deadly sin for this exact reason. It has so much potential to be a great thing. I'd love to hear some more opinions on it.

One of my favorite quotes. It's in the context of replying to someone who agrees Greed is bad.

"I disagree. You want to bring back someone that you've lost. You might want money. Maybe you want women. Or, you might want to protect the world. These are all common things people want. Things that their hearts desire. Greed may not be good, but it's not so bad, either. Humans think greed is just for money and power! But everyone wants something they don't have."

RE: Greed #2
You know I never thought of greed to be anything other than money and power. I always thought wanting to help others and protect others was always kindness or some other type of feeling. So I agree that some forms of greed is necessary but not all. I keep my money, I save it up but I try not to be greedy, if I have the chance to help a friend I will let them borrow some money.
I guess it all just depends

I'm pretty sure that the term greed doesn't apply to things such as wanting to feel good about one's self.

That wanting to feel good is not greedy.

Some might argue otherwise.

For example, one might feel good and realizes that they indeed feel good, however, they are not content with it and want to feel better.

This might be an example of so-called greed.

I have taken an ethics class (turned out to be Christian ethics)
and we learnt about the 7 deadly sins.

Greed (Source: Wikipedia)

Greed (Latin, avaritia), also known as avarice, cupidity or covetousness, is, like lust and gluttony, a sin of excess. However, greed (as seen by the church) is applied to a very excessive or rapacious desire and pursuit of material possessions. Thomas Aquinas wrote, "Greed is a sin against God, just as all mortal sins, in as much as man condemns things eternal for the sake of temporal things." In Dante's Purgatory, the penitents were bound and laid face down on the ground for having concentrated too much on earthly thoughts. Scavenging[citation needed] and hoarding of materials or objects, theft and robbery, especially by means of violence, trickery, or manipulation of authority are all actions that may be inspired by Greed. Such misdeeds can include simony, where one attempts to purchase or sell sacraments, including Holy Orders and, therefore, positions of authority in the Church hierarchy.

As defined outside of Christian writings, greed is an inordinate desire to acquire or possess more than one needs, especially with respect to material wealth.

I don't know, but I've always been under the impression that greed applies to material possessions.

Why must greed be limited to such?
