That's still an extremely weak argument as to why Google can't expand into hardware. Following your logic there should only be one phone manufacturer, only one car producer, only one of everything that produces any sort of technological service or otherwise.

No, I argue that the things Google is actually good at are software/website things. GMail is still technically in open beta, it's one of the most widely used mail services. They shouldn't attempt to venture into the hardware market for their own good.

To be fair, Google isn't a fledgling. It's a company giant, and worse case scenario their company will still survive the hit since, as you said, their mailing service is one of the most used.
They're venturing out to make more profit in a time where the risk minimal compared to great reward. That's what running a business is.
