No, I argue that the things Google is actually good at are software/website things. GMail is still technically in open beta, it's one of the most widely used mail services. They shouldn't attempt to venture into the hardware market for their own good.

To be fair, Google isn't a fledgling. It's a company giant, and worse case scenario their company will still survive the hit since, as you said, their mailing service is one of the most used.
They're venturing out to make more profit in a time where the risk minimal compared to great reward. That's what running a business is.
