A number of high-profile Twitter accounts, including those of US presidential candidate Joe Biden, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, Bill Gates, Elon Musk, Uber, and Apple, were breached simultaneously in what's a far-reaching hacking campaign carried out to promote a cryptocurrency scam.

The broadly targeted hack posted similar worded messages urging millions of followers to send money to a specific bitcoin wallet address in return for larger payback.

"Everyone is asking me to give back, and now is the time," a tweet from Mr Gates' account said. "You send $1,000, I send you back $2,000."

Twitter termed the security incident as a "coordinated social engineering attack" against its employees who access its internal tools.

As of writing, the scammers behind the operation have amassed nearly $120,000 in bitcoins, suggesting that unsuspecting users have indeed fallen for the fraudulent scheme.

This clearly demonstrates the power of exploiting the weakest link In the security chain.

One thing doesnt sit right with me, they SE'ed all the way in and then use a terrible BTC scam to gain a small amount (relative to the account hacked/reach) of money aprox 120k I've heard the passwords were dumped on the DarkWeb could it possibly be two different groups? 1 that SE'ed their way in and the 2nd that did the bad BTC scams, maybe I'm thinking too highly of the Social Engineering done.

Let me know your thoughts.

Right I understand your point but the amount of time/effort it must've taken to obtain all these accounts seems considerably large, just wondering what their gameplan was I suppose

On a bright side, maybe the attackers in this instance was just simply warning everyone of the danger. They could be doing a lot more like the ILPT post quoted below:

The real money would be using the twitter account to manipulate the stock price of TSLA. If you tweeted something about Tesla using Elon’s account, depending on what you say, you could manipulate the stock price.

For an example, Open up a short position (betting the stock will go down) on TLSA stock. Make sure to go all in! Then tweet “All Tesla factories will be shutting down for the next year due to virus concerns. We care more about our employees safety than profits. We are open to filling for bankruptcy if need be.”

The stock price will tank and you will make thousands, possibly millions depending on how much you put in. This could work with any company that is publicly traded.

As everything of this manner, I am just stating the possibilities. Nobody is inviting anyone to do that. This is simply an act of fiction.

This news is very strange. in this case, is the hacker too smart or the owner of the account and Twitter too stupid
