If you want corporate experience, sure. If you want to make money, no. A company that does web designing and development is the same as a person doing freelance; however, they assign the work to the developers that work for them for less pay.

I would suggest starting one of these companies rather than working for one. It's up to the developer though, some people like getting bossed around. I'd prefer to be hiring rather than getting hired.

The main reason places use a template is because its cheaper for the end user and more profitable for the company. If they create there own templates from scratch then its not necessarily a bad thing. Using someone else's templates on the other hand is lame.
You mind is programmable – if you’re not programming your mind, someone else will program it for you.
