I recommend getting a part time job at a local web design/dev business, it's a far better way of building a professional portfolio.

To get started, you should offer to do work experience at every business you apply for, it's an easy way of getting your foot in the door and a great learning experience.

If you want corporate experience, sure. If you want to make money, no. A company that does web designing and development is the same as a person doing freelance; however, they assign the work to the developers that work for them for less pay.

I would suggest starting one of these companies rather than working for one. It's up to the developer though, some people like getting bossed around. I'd prefer to be hiring rather than getting hired.

The main reason places use a template is because its cheaper for the end user and more profitable for the company. If they create there own templates from scratch then its not necessarily a bad thing. Using someone else's templates on the other hand is lame.

Start a new company by going to different older styled companies and show them new work, and sell designed sites for 500+. A local company here in Washington does shit designs from templates for around 600+ xD it's ridiculous what people will pay for shit.
