The server needs to have java installed on it. It's a good alternative if the server doesn't have PHP.

Well yeah, it's obvious thy the system needs Java installed, but I mem can it be ran on any server OS (as long as it has Java of course)? Also, why servers don't have PHP installed in 2013 o.o

Yeah, there's no OS dependency, and some servers don't need php or don't want to open themselves up to possible security issues.
