What is it?

Five Nights at Freddy's is an independent horror game by animdude, released on July 24th, 2014. The gameplay is relatively unique in that rather than exploration or fighting, the player is tasked with utilizing security cameras to monitor relatively harmless (or so they're told) animatronics that seem to malfunction at night - there is no other way to protect themselves other than blocking the doors electronically while their power - and lifeline - slowly drains away.

What is it about?

The player walks in the shoes of a security guard starting his new job as the night shift at Freddy Fazbear's Pizza, a local family pizzeria. The job is simple - watch over the animatronics during the night time to ensure that nothing is damaged in the restaurant - including yourself, as the player is to learn. Unbeknownst to the new security guard, these robots tend to malfunction at night and start to wander the premises, looking for new employees to "help" into costume - that is, forcefully and brutally stuffing their bodies into machine animatronics until nothing but their eyes and teeth pop out of the mask.

The only means of protecting yourself is to monitor these machines as they walk about the restaurant, checking the hallways periodically, and shutting the automated doors when they get a bit too close for comfort. Beware though: due to the budget costs of the restaurant, you're only given a certain amount of power throughout the night, and you must efficiently utilize the lights, cameras and doors to ensure your own safety. Be careful, because as the nights go on deeper into the week, the animatronics tend to become more active, unpredictable, and deadly...

Where can I download it?

You can buy it for $2.49 (currently discounted at 50%) on Desura, or...

Spoiler:
You can alternatively torrent the game here.

Final notes

It doesn't have the most gracious graphics nor most horrifying scares, but it really breathes a new type of gameplay into the horror genre. Don't think it won't get to you though - paranoia and anticipation are the key factors of the fear in this game, and it engrosses you pretty darn deep. If you're looking for something alternative to play after all the first-person horror games, give this game a try.

Sounds very original. I might just pick this game up. It looks like the devs actually care about the game too, patches come out when glitches come up. Thanks for the share.

I personally think the graphics would turn me away from this game, just because for me personally good graphics are required to make a game scary, but I think I might give it a shot when I get home to my desktop PC.

I thought the graphics would turn me off too, but the immersion when playing with headphones at night time is just insane.

SCP was one of the very, very few horror games I just couldn't fully play, it was too scary.

Woah, I can't believe I forgot about SCP, and it's one of the few good free games to boot. I ought to make a thread about it.

That had to be the best game in the horror genre genre, and far surpassed the original Slender even though that was also a very good horror game. Yet very, very few people actually have played SCP.

The best part is that it's still being worked on and expanding with updates, and the fact that there's a limitless amount of SCP stories means that it has an infinite amount of potential.

In the lore of of the game there is currently 999 SCP creatures, the first being unnamed and the last one being "The Tickle Monster" which is just very, very creepy.
