why not adding more ram? especially if you're getting into heavy design/rendering work.

You also need to allow for expansion, meaning future computing developments/advancements. Here's one of my systems running 16 GB of Ram- simply consumed by 4 weeks of uptime and around 60 browser tabs active.

If I were to run a couple of VMs simultaneously, I'd run out of memory.
