Hey Forum,

I'm having a hard time grasping the basics of C. I know it's a lengthy process and I shouldn't expect to learn it in a few weeks.

How did you find your feet with C? What did you do to teach yourself? What resources / websites do you recommend?

Easy way to find your feet. Probably nowhere close to valid code.

I'm not sure what you mean by "find your feet". Maybe get a foothold in it? Have some grounding? Start out? Its not very explainitory.

But ot, what concepts exactly are you having problems with?

Get the book written by the man himself, Dennis Ritchie. "The C Programming Language". Read it cover to cover.

Grasping the basics of C is not a lengthy process. What are you stuck on? C is a fairly minimal language to begin with -- maybe I have a biased point of view also having a C++ background, but C is still very simple. Really the most complex things that are also somewhat common in C are function pointers, pointer to pointers, pointer arithmetic, bit fields, and a couple other things, but there's not a lot. Everything else is conceptual or not really part of the language in itself, but provided for or with the language or the idea of the programming language for lack of a better general explanation -- inline asm, compiling & linking, makefiles perhaps, bitwise math, and others.

When I first wanted to learn programming about three years ago, I decided to learn C/C++, as I heard that it was fast, and one of the most used languages in the industry. I bought a book, mainly "Sams teach yourself C++ in one hour a day", and studied it constantly. I must have read through it at least 3 times, and doing so allowed me to memorize the concepts i was being taught and gain a better understanding of the language. If i was you, I would buy a book, or watch a good set of online tutorials. It'll be a long journey before you can call yourself a proficient programmer, but the journey is fun and rewarding if you are passionate about the subject.

I learned C with the book from Dennis Ritchie, The C Programming Language. Its old but still has a usefull way to teach u how to learn C effectiv.
What helped me the most was to code by myself, correct my bugs and help other guys at forums or sites like github to get their stuff going.
The rest is practise. Well, thats my opinion.
