In my opinion it mostly slows your system down. If you know what you are doing, you don't need one. Different story for, let's say, your (grand)parents or if you feel the need to open each and every .exe file or click on every link. If you can't provide basic (and I mean basic) level of security for yourself, then go for it. Otherwise: don't.

Windows Defender has been really good for a few years now. And it comes preinstalled with Windows 10 and 11. So for Windows I would say let it be.

Linux and MacOS should do fine without; As long as you're only downloading from official repositories.
