IRC link in contact field #1
Following up the approval of @Demonboy's thread, which is now finished, so instead of posting this there, I would like to
continue with a suggestion about integrating support for IRC link in the contacts field. And also because IRC is very anonymous and popular way of communication
for hackers, programmers, tech-nerds, computer-wizards and sometimes gamers. Maybe we could have a common sinister channel in the future ?

So, what do you think about my suggestion to include IRC link in contacts field now that discord link will be added? Smile

RE: IRC link in contact field #2
I cerebrated IRC was one of those platforms that dwindled after Discord was relinquished. If it is still a popular platform, then sure!
Best regards,
Kon6

RE: IRC link in contact field #3
IRC is very much the same with Discord. While we don't run one anymore, we don't want people advertising channels in their profile.

We've ran 3 IRC servers in the past. Each one was more inactive than the last. People just prefer the convenience of Discord and many are using it already.

I believe IRC popularity, that already wasn't at his highest, has really decreased since Discord arrived yeah. I still use it daily, much more than Discord! The main drawback being that there is no server backlog

Can't argue with that ! (except that I'd personally prefer SL having an IRC than a Discord, but I'm obvious an exception ^^)

It's unfortunate but it would only get 30 people at most, while the Discord has 3000+. @phyrrus9 preferred IRC as well.

RE: IRC link in contact field #6
I think the issue isn't whether we (SL) have an IRCd, it's whether or not it's convenient, as Oni said. Many users prefer the ease of use of Discord and even though it's proprietary, I am inclined to agree that it's probably better for most people. I hate to recommend Discord, so I don't, but it may be all people know how to use and we should always try to help our peers communicate with what they're comfortable with, rather than pushing an obscure outdated form of communication like IRC. I still use it, because I have been for over a decade, but I know it's not viable for some of the "new" users, if you know what I mean.

I will recommend that users of SL take a minute or two and research how easy IRC actually is to use. It's decentralized and a very secure platform, which is customizable to your own needs. It's far from dead even while it's been overtaken by other platforms you might hear today. You can do many things on IRC that you simply can't on Discord or Slack or (ew) Google Hangouts.

For instance, you can encrypt everything end-to-end, and even be connected from Tor (still possible on Discord, but not as easily for new internet-goers). This allows anonymous communication not connected to your identity whatsoever and it has been used by hackers and professionals including developers, dev-ops, net-admins, etc. It's very proven and secure, I will always recommend you check it out and test for yourself. But it remains that Discord is plug-and-play, so it's adoptable faster for groups than setting up an IRC and staff and securing round robin networks and anti-DDoS framework, etc.

The platform was fun while it lasted back in the day. I was gone for years and much has changed but the security and convenience of users is what matters more, I guess.

I, for one, am not participating in the sinisterly discord group. Not all people are comfortable with voice-chatting with random strangers on discord.
Its just creepy and awkward. also, the "you havent sent a picture of yourself yet, show us how you look", can be quite annoying.
so its more or less an anonymity issue aswell. discord channels unfortunately have a tendency to become infested with mindless stupidity and usually,
its only a good tradeoff for extroverted people of a certain type, its not for everyone. especially not if youre awkward, shy, quiet, etc.

so maybe there could be some form of alternative, for people who dont want to send pictures of themselves,
who dont want to voicechat, who dont want to have to deal with jackassery every day and get the "Im going to invite you to a discord call, hop on discord, idc what ure doing."

are you going to atleast listen to what im saying? or just settle with 'what may not be the best for everyone, may be best for most of us'?

I'm focused on things we can do to improve the forum and diverting discussion to another platform isn't in line with that. I personally despise Discord, but that's what members want to use. We've seen it multiple times over, as we used IRC for years (even exclusively at one point). While I do appreciate the suggestion and prefer IRC personally, there's no sense in flogging a dead horse.

In regards to your perception of Discord, I'd argue ours is the exact opposite. People communicate primarily through messages. It's very rare for people to share pictures of themselves or use voice chat. If anything, these communication channels are meant to be entirely secondary to the forum. We want actual conversations to happen here.

I totally understand why people want an IRC, and why this frequently comes up time and time again. I won't repeat what Oni said, as that would be pointless. However, I will let people know we don't demand pictures or VCs in the Discord. That's not really our culture in the Discord. However, the Discord, and any other chat service we may use is NOT an extension of the forum. It's a place where people can BS and socialise, nothing else.

okay, well, I personally have very bad experiences of discord. people asking me to send naked pictures,
some douchebag people that werent even friends who invited me to random discord groups and picked on me because of my crappy social skills,
world of warcraft guild owners who treated their entire guild as slaves and ranked people based on how cool or 'hot' they were,
and yeah. the list could go on, but from personal experience, I dont really feel comfortable in those big group chats,

and yeah. flogging a dead horse, is that all you have to say about my suggestion?
isnt this a hacking forum? IRC is not dead, many people still use it. you make it sound like its weird to even suggest it.
and you maybe misinterpreted my text, but Im not asking for an entire sinisterly IRC channel,

all Im asking for is to be able to link your IRC in the 'contact' info. wouldnt you like to have that? also, as an option for us who dont use discord.
