A Chinese couple has been arrested for selling their children to fund their gaming.
The couple, named A Hui and A Mei in reports, were interviewed in a detention center where they confirmed that they had had two children both of whom they sold to human traffickers. The proceeds of their sale were apparently then used help support the father’s online gaming hobby.
“[A Hui] likes buying items in online games, and he likes staying out all night at internet cafes,” said A Mei.
The cost of A Hui’s gaming had apparently become so substantial that the couple think they’d be able to support either of their children. They turned to human traffickers as an alternative, an all too common occurrence in the country where trafficking has long been a major issue. The pair were reported to authorities by A Hui’s father, resulting in their arrest. They’re now awaiting trial in jail for their crimes.
This couple makes online gaming look like a crack addiction. I'm surprised it's so easy to find human traffickers, much less sell children to them. What are your thoughts?
