Building my PC from parts I'm collecting #1
I've spent most of my life on budget laptops or a Dell Optiplex. But fairly soon, I'll finally be able to build a fair-spec PC. It won't be a high end gaming rig or anything like that, but it also won't limit me to 10-15 Firefox tabs (yes, I need much much more). I have been collecting parts for some time, and each component has its own story to it.

So far, I have a CPU (AMD Phenom II X3), a GPU (EVGA GTX 480) and I'm working on getting some RAM now. After that, the only necessities left are the motherboard and a power supply, which tend to be the cheapest parts of a build so I might just be able to buy them. In the spirit of keeping things as budget as possible, I probably won't buy a case and I'll use a spare hard drive I have laying around (~300GB). I'm sure I'll eventually put it in a case and get a nice mechanical keyboard, but I won't upgrade this computer. This build will probably have sentimental value to me for years to come.

Does your build have a story, or any sentimental value to it? Or did you just buy all the parts and put it together?

I know exactly how you feel, I have always been working off low-budget laptops. I'm happy you get to ascend to more than 15 tabs in FF <3
Are you getting all of your parts second hand or are you actually buying them? Just curious because I am planning on actually investing some money into a half decent PC myself.

So far I've gotten them from friends who gave them to me. My friend gave me his old GPU and my last girlfriend got me the CPU a couple Christmases ago. The only parts I'm planning on buying are the mobo and PSU, but if I'm lucky I might be able to get them without paying if I find a friend with spares.

Nicely done! I recommend actually buying the PSU from a retailer because if you get a faulty one it could absolutely ruin your build.

How do you live with only 15 tabs....

My build was my first, but that doesn't stop me from upgrading it or anything. I don't really tie sentimental value to things strongly...
I still can't find a good keyboard, and don't have an extra $200-300 to build one from scratch.

Good luck with your build, and make sure not to spill anything on the mobo.

Yeah I'll most likely end up buying one from a retailer. I don't know anyone with a PSU anyway.

Lol ikr, I've had my laptop lock up on me after opening too many tabs. I'm paranoid to go above 10 now. Also, the vulnerabilities of an open build really make me consider getting at least a really cheap case. Dunno what I will do yet.

Find a random plastic box?

Lol, that reminds me of my idea to build a case out of carboard. In all seriousness though, you can find cases that aren't that bad for under $50. I'll probably end up doing that.

Not so much low budget, but I was the same with low-end lappies until I spent over 11k on Predators. It's the best decision I made.

@"Dr. Keter", when you get a moment and/or when all parts are purchased, I'd be Interested to read your specs.

It'll probably be a couple months before I'll finally be able to get everything together, but when the time comes I'll make a new thread or update this one.
