Britain may be forced to ration the internet, expert warns.. #1
Had to shorten the title as it couldn't fit normally.

Quote:Britain could be forced to introduce internet rationing, after an expert warned it could consume the country’s entire power supply within 20 years.

Experts said we were close to “filling up” the nation’s network of optical fibres for the first time ever, with the demands of popular video-streaming websites like YouTube and Netflix putting an unprecedented strain on communications infrastructure.

Industry figures will be meeting at London’s Royal Society later this month to discuss the impending “capacity crunch” facing Britain’s internet companies, and experts said that with devices such as PCs and TVs included, internet transmission already accounts for between 8 and 16 per cent of Britain’s power.

I wish I was making this up.

Murica FTW not really but ehhh I had to.

I think the world needs to focus more on Solar and wind power as well as dam power like the hoover dam.

Just the hoover dam alone supplies constant power to 8 million people. There is plenty of dams that can be fitted with these electricity producing capabilities.

I'm hoping to eventually install a turbine on my property. We have a pretty constant wind here. That and maybe some solar would be cool. Shit gets expensive quick though :-/

Solar power is not cheap but it pays for itself if you are in a state with fair sunlight. Just think never having to pay electric again from just $800 to $1200 worth of solar panels.

And if you have constant wind that turbine can help a lot.

So the average summer electric bill is around $300ish in 5 months worth of electric bills you could of got solar power.

Code:
Payback Time (years) = Total Cost of Installation / Savings per Year

OT: wat no...

So what they're saying Is, the Internet Is consuming their power supply and nothing else?

They need to get their heads together, and look at the big picture In overall power consumption.

This article is shit. This whole article runs of of the assumption that no new technology will be developed that is more power efficient.

And the figure they are throwing around about 8 - 16% of power consumption includes TVs and PCs. I'm guessing that follows to servers as well. They are all rather power hungry devices. 16% of all power consumption isn't really that much when you think about what is pretty much always on in nearly every house hold.

So what if the cables will get full, lay more. That is how business works. You sell a product, demand for said product goes up over time you need more of that product. Then as the power demand goes up, the power companies will have to provide more power.

I wouldn't be surprised if this is bullshit propaganda by ISPs to allow them to charge more for less
