Best OS for a non-gaming or hosting server. 07-27-2013, 08:03 AM

Currently, I always recommend Windows Server 2012 to all my customers. It works best in an all windows office, which is what most businesses are. Although its major con is price. Now I know there must be a good Linux distro that's free and works just as good, but I'm afraid to try something I know nothing about on a business. So I'd like to ask if any of you guys have recommendations for good server software? Thanks for any and all contributions.

SUSE is a popular server OS. Has just the right balance between functionality and elegance for a low-end server.
But, of course, if you're setting up a server, it usually has to be compatible with current infrastructure. You can make linux compatible with just about anything, but it's a pain to make windows services run on Linux.

I'd say CentOS or Debian. I've used both for web-hosting and they get the job done. I'm starting to prefer Debian more.
