Yes, you can identify VMs through just the default settings including base RAM and kernel (linux VM) and resolution. More in depth, you can do this across multiple browsers thanks to "plugins, the selected time zone, "do not track" and whether an adblocker is being used." This is just the basic ways websites can fingerprint and is not nearly within the scope of a reply here.
Yeah we know what fingerprints are, but not enough information are shared between a VM and his host as explained in my previous link.
What you're talking about and the link you shared are totally true but don't concern VMs, only direct hardware (and according to your article even Tor can prevent that)!

We're talking about BROWSER fingerprints, not IP detection. That's another subject for another thread.
A VPN doesn't anonymize you, either. Tor is the only thing that remotely makes you look like the rest of the network.
Not Brave, not Firefox with tons of anti-adware and ad-blockers. That makes it worse and easier to finger a user.
Tor is not a protocol, it's a routing network. A VPN spoofs your IP as a byproduct of securing your traffic.
Two separate sides of the problem, but not technically on the same coin.
E.g., using a VM is still obvious when on Tails and Whonix and isn't even recommended by either party.
Yet, people still use both in a VM because they think they're anonymous (they are, when their data passes through the Tor network) and bulletproof because their information is routed through several nodes/countries, etc. Your data still passes to the exit node, which gets enough information to identify your browser and whether you use a VM.

Source, so you can check my information on your own time:  "Tor simply repeats requests as an anonymous transparent HTTP proxy, meaning it does not attach typical proxy headers (such as Via or X-Forwarded-For), or in any other way modify HTTP requests or responses (besides being "onion routed, encrypted and decrypted" through the Tor network). Hey you don't need to explain what are browsers, fingerprints, vpn and IP. Come one, you know better !
I was just saying without a spoofed IP who cares about your browser fingerprint ! No need to argue about that it's pretty simple and clear. In security the weakest link is, well the weakest link ! That's just a reminder. So I'll pass about all this useless speech sorry. ^^

Well it can detect IF you use a VM yes (as explained in my previous link), but it CAN'T fingerprint YOUR vm/hardware specifically (as explained in my previous link), meaning YOU ARE anonymous fingerprint-related.
And If you're using a VPN the first "exit node" (whatever you mean by that) is from your hardware to the VPN, meaning the VPN could directly identify you; and between the VPN and internet, meaning public agents can't properly identify you.

So you kinda changed subject but I'm still waiting, as you seem pretty convinced, for any proof regarding hardware fingerprint thru VMs ! Wink

We totally agree about that, as I said earlier a VM is useless if you don't use a VPN of some sort obviously.
