Anime recommendations #1
Hey,
I have wanted to start watching anime.
Which ones would you recommend and why?

Action (pew pew) animu.

Soul Eater - Soul Eater is a pretty well known anime, since it is considerably really good. There are silly moments, so this could be partially considered `comedy`, but I wouldn't, by a long shot, put this under a comedic genre.
Sword Art Online - This is a really good anime, however, only part of it is what makes it good. For the first half of the anime, you are introduced to characters that may seem meaningless, however, they actually add onto the story more than one would think. The plot, or rather general idea for it, is great, but
Spoiler:
this has its' downs around episode 14 and onward

Romance animu.

Guilty Crown - It is a good action anime with a dab of romance, which is the cherry on top.
Spoiler:
It has a sad ending, so you may want to exercise your tears before the last few episodes.

Mekakucity Actors - It has good graphics and audio, however, like all, or at least most, anime, this has its' down points, and in this one there are quite a few of them. This also has a romantic background to it, and a few saddening moments, but nothing to the point of crying. Well, not for me anyways.
Kyoukai no Kanata - This is more leaned towards action than romance, but it's still a visible genre. I recommend it for the plot, and Kuriyama is a cutie.

Comedy animu.

The World God Only Knows - This is an anime with a heavy romantic background to it, hell, the plot is built for it. However, there are plenty of good laughs in this, and even though I placed this under `comedy`, it's more towards romance. I put it under comedy, and not romance, because even though it has a romance background, it still provides enough material to have a comedic sub-genre.
I Can't Understand What my Husband is Saying! - This anime is practically made for comedy. It is (pardon the language) funny as fuck, and is quite possibly one of the best comedy animes I have seen in a long time. It has sexual references and jokes in it, so proceed with caution.

Things you may want to stay away from:

Naruto - I can wholeheartedly say stay away from this anime. It is good in its' first few (maybe 50 or so) episodes, but starts to be repetitive. I am, by no means, saying don't watch it. By all means, watch it if you wish, but proceed with caution as this can get rather repetitive.

Fairy Tail - This is a REALLY good anime, however, like Naruto, it ends up getting really repetitive. I recommend this anime, but only maybe the first hundred episodes. After that, you might as well move onto Fairy Tail 2014

And remember:
  • Subs, not dubs.
  • Everyone has an opinion.

I got hooked on anime after watching Bleach but now I'm no longer a fan of that anime.

I would vouch for Sword Art Online. It's hugely popular so there is a fan-craze going on with it but if you can ignore the hype, it's a great show.

I would recommend several shows but it depends on what you're interested in? There is such a huge variety. What genres are you into? Have you used sites like Crunchyroll and MyAnineList? They have plenty of information and on Crunchyroll they have a top shows list (I forget what it's called) and most of the shows on that list are great.

Dragon Ball Z and Sailor Moon among others introduced Anime to my generation. I was a DBZ fan, although I never finished the series because, like other have said, it can start to get repetitive. Cowboy Bebop is good, saw the movie in theater when the local theater ran a special weekend of movies. Also enjoy Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex. Trigun is not too bad and it's not overly long; something like 13 episodes I think. Shin Chan is lewd and funny in its own way. Full Metal Alchemist is pretty good and slightly dark. Death Note is a very interesting anime that leaves you wondering how everything is going to happen.

That's the list off the top of my head that I've seen and enjoyed.

Guiltily, I have to admit, I watched Sailor Moon when I was really young. Pokemon too, of course. I must have had a crush on one of the Sailors.

How could I even forget Pokemon. There's that one too.

Sailor Moon honestly confused me as a kid, because it was my first exposure to anime ever and I didn't really understand wtf I was seeing. Then that weird guy in a tuxedo (Tuxedo Mask) kept showing up and I was like whut?

Some people have specific sites they prefer, but I have a pretty simple method of finding the show I want to watch. Say you want to find Soul Eater, here's how I find it:

  1. Go to Google.
  2. Start with the name of the anime (Soul Eater in this case)
  3. After the name of the Anime, type 'Episode 1'
  4. And after that typed either 'Subbed' or 'Dubbed', either works but some less popular anime don't have dubs.
  5. In the end, your Google should look like this: 'Soul Eater Episode 1 Subbed' and then click the first link you find.

If you happen to have like a Crunchyroll membership, it'd probably be best to use that as the anime on Crunchyroll is HD, and the anime on the websites you'll find with my method won't usually be over 480p (which really doesn't look much different in my opinion, it's just the subtitles look a little better and everything looks a bit sharper).
