What exactly is the difference between FMA and FMA: Brotherhood? I was told it was animation and voice were updated but I find that slightly hard to believe.

While the original series was still airing, it caught up with the manga at the time, and it had to go off into an original storyline, which a lot of people think didn't do the series justice. When the manga was near or about finished, they restarted the anime to follow the manga storyline - a lot of people liked it better. The animation and voices being updated are a nice bonus, too.

Never watched either honestly. Watched the first like 5 episodes of Brotherhood, couldn't really get into it and I set it aside.
