Alt rock #1
I've been trying to expand my horizons with music once again, but in the lighter direction (I'm not quite ready for full-on death metal. Yet Tongue). Alt-J, Heavy Young Heathens, Silversun Pickups, and a Canadian artist I just discovered named Grimes are all on my current playlist.

What are you guys listening to from the alt scene? Any recommendations?

Fun fact about Grimes, a lot of her music video for Kill v. Maim (which is nominated for a Juno, kinda cool) was shot here in Toronto in the "secret" Bay Street subway station that gets used in tons of movies.
It's often the outcasts, the iconoclasts ... those who have the least to lose because they
don't have much in the first place, who feel the new currents and ride them the farthest.

This is probably one of the first music threads I've actually clicked on from SL in the 4 years I've been here.

I tend to shy away from music since I know so little and haven't got a defined taste (ppl be jugdin'). I don't have any recommendations for you, but I'm curious to listen to some of what you mentioned in this thread. I like some parts of metal but aren't really accustomed to the really heavy stuff, so used to align more to alt rock too!

Hm, in terms of "lighter" metal, I'd say definitely check out Rainbow, Dio (same singer), Iron Maiden, Avenged Sevenfold, and maybe Ghost (be warned, there's some real heavy instrumentals).

In terms of not having a preference, I'd say that's beneficial, if anything. For example, I fucking hate country and trap, and I'll usually straight up leave the room if either starts playing. Not having a refined taste generally means you're more open to everything, so you can really listen to whatever comes your way without bias.

Idk if it's actually considered alt but here's what I liked
A Day To Remember
All Time Low (band not the song)
Senses Fall
Good Charlotte
Dashboard Confessional
Mayday Parade
Yellow card
Weezer (their white album is amazing)
Who Knows?

I've listened to a bit of A Day to Remember and Good Charlotte, and Weezer is awesome. All Time Low has some good lyrics, but I think they're wasted with their style. If it was a little less angsty, I'd be all for it.

I'm familiar with a few of those!
I do know what you mean... One thing I will not tolerate is really derogatory rap... Stuff like "Or nah" or whatever that horrific song is called is not for me xD Otherwise I'm ok hearing other stuff. I either like it or I don't.
