No, definitely an Uzi - an Israeli made weapon. Similar in style to the MAC-10, which I believe you're referencing.

Yes the Ingram MAC-10 is often referred to as the "American Uzi" because of its similarity with the Uzi. But the Israeli UZI is sold in the USA?

They are similar. I have shot both. I think the Uzi has a bit more recoil. At least that was my experience. I have shot the standard, mini, and micro.

Agreed it's debatable. Hindsight and all... he should have a precaution in place for the recoil. Whether that means he should have held the gun with her, not let her use it at all, not sure.

I'm not an expert, but civilians may be able to buy semi-auto versions of Uzi's. Law enforcement and licensed dealers can probably get the real thing. Also, in some states I believe civvies can buy them, but must jump thru many hoops and pay an exorbitant amount for it.
