The difference is like comparing a painting of a clock to a clock with no face, they are both pretty much useless to the average person. But if you cut the painting up and make the face of the clock out of it and then attack it to your mechanical pieces, you have a fully working and functional clock, meaning one is no good without the other. Maybe my explanation is confusing, but it gives you a different way of looking at things.
