The difference with paid VPNs for some providers, Is simply not limiting your bandwidth nor disconnecting every ex-amount of hours. Others may also offer more servers. Protection and the encryption grade remain the same between both paid & free.

Another factor that remains the same is the chance of the service keeping logs, being unfaithful to users, etc.
