Usually it's better, if you're planning on running dodgy software or you're not sure whether something contains a virus. It's always a good idea to run it on a separate virtual machine, sandboxed. You could leave the AV away all together then, but if you'd were to install an AV on the VM and you want to add Exceptions, this can be quite useful.
