I have rewritten this post multiple times to try and get my words out properly, so here it goes.
The "hacking" scene was always a roller coaster, it would rise and fall with the trends, You would have the real hardcore hackers pop up teach something then either move into a job or into prison. Yeah you read that correctly, the real hackers aren't freeloaders, they are research analysts, or government analysts, or government funded groups, that is the forefront of hacking. Yes when something big happens the smaller groups pop up like anonymous, but at the end of the day all of those groups disperse, leaving the hacking scene to the only people who keep it alive, the skids. They are the little kids ratting, doxxing, asking how to hack facebook, etc, they will be tomorrows hacker and possible fed, that is just how it works.
Now the part where people like to blame Millennials I don't agree with, sure my generation has its fuck ups, but every generation does. Blaming the past of future generation will get you no where in life, because every generation has fucked it up going way way back and we can only hope the future ones figure out how to fix it, thats's life.
Is SL dead, not by a very very long shot, sure some of the more active folks will vanish from time to time, but that is because a majority of us are grown ass adults who have to put food on the table and raise our families, so lapses in activity happen, but that only gives the limelight up for someone else to shine in. Back when I started I surpassed @mothered in daily and monthly post count for a few months, I had a lot to say, a lot to share, but nowdays my daily sinisterly trip is clearing alerts, handling pms and answering threads. I enjoy the community and wish I had more time to pop on discord and spend hours talking bullshit, or jumping on minecraft and doing silly shit, but RL happens, seasons change and SL just keeps on kicking. I might be a new account here but I lurked on SL for a couple years, reading what I had access too and moving on, I have belonged to a hell of a lot of forums over the years, on a large variety of subjects that interest me, SL is the only one I try to make time to pop in daily for.
Oh and why the hell limit ourselves by declaring the forum one type or another, I hope some of the ex Neogaf members migrate here to bolster the gaming section, I hope we continue to grow, expanding every section and subforum, until there is so much sensory overload that groups will finally have their purposes fulfilled.
