I'm honestly surprised nobody realized the most obvious one.... fucking cryptocurrency mining pools!

I don't mine, nor have i read about it so I would not be the wiser of that.

Well, we all know that mining is a big industry, and pools are used to that the workload can be split up over thousands of clients, which are usually CPU or GPU miners. If it's GPU that's great because the mining pool application has kernel level hooks. If you controlled a mining pool coordinator, then you can control all the PCs in it, you just toss your botnet whatever down to the clients, they execute it, use that as a chain loader.
