Unless your a big gamer, there really isn't any reason to stick with Windows, most programs have a Linux alternative and for those that don't you can easily run them in a VM. I would suggest you make a live disc (can be a disc or usb) and try out a few distros, @Ender will suggest the more tech savvy ones but I suggest Kubuntu or Linux Mint, especially if you are fresh from Windows.
