The trick is practice. After a while, you'll get better at gauging interest in others. Generally looking over and noticing someone also looking at you or in your direction fairly commonly is a good sign of attraction. Your best bet no matter if you're trying to get a partner or not, is to be friendly and give people their space. Treat everyone equally and then you'll be abble to gauge even better. Only oggling your senpai will make you seem creepy even if they remotely like you. Being friendly makes you more approachable but too much will also make you seem creepy. This might sound complicated to some, but it really isn't. Just be you and don't over do anything.

I kind of follow this rough form:
Strangers get simple small talk, doors being held (male and female so don't even reeeeeeeeeeeee me) picking up dropped pencils etc
Strangers who approach me and talk to me semi frequently basically get everything that they do/give to me (phone numbers, snapchats, etc)
Friends, STAY FUCKING FRIENDS UNLESS THEY FUCKING ACT ON SOMETHING OR YOU'RE GOING BALLS TO THE FUCKING WALL

People you are excited to see or talk with purely for conversation are good friends

If you feel like you guys were strangers one day, then were friends the next, and then traded phone numbers the next day, odds are you found a possible gf or bf
