In college, know the feel (and i really suck at cooking).
I can cook Rice, Chicken, and eggs pretty effectively. If you can do that, you'll probably go a pretty long way. There are a million different ways to prepare rice and chicken. I pretty much live off of it.
Getting a rice cooker helps a ton (drop the rice in, put in the right amount of water, set and forget). Chicken can be grilled, breaded, basted, oven-cooked, marinated, you name it. Just look up "Chicken recipe" on Google and you get a mil diff results.
I also like to get easy to make stuff. Rice Noodles are the shit, soy sauce is fucking amazing, etc etc. I really don't like spending too much time cooking, though. So sometimes i just drink soylent.
TL;DR I suck at cooking, but the trick is to get really really good at cooking something simple, and figuring out the varieties thereof. (Find a staple you like, and start from there)
