Here's a tip when you miss gears and hear grinding as a learner

put the gear shift to neutral(in the middle where its not engaging any gears)
lift the clutch up all the way.
then press it down again and attempt to change gear.
it will be a lot smoother when you try it again..

this action syncs the gears and get those cogs spinning at the same speed.
this is called 'double clutching' (as mentioned but never explained in many films)
its a technique for racing car drivers but i found it works well with a learner who grid gears too.
