When others ask the very same question about learning a programming language, I've always said "It depends what you wish to achieve".

Given Python Is a general purpose language, It's certainly a good starting point. I myself, am self-taught with every facet of computing. You're pretty switched on and knowledgeable, so It won't be a problem to learn Python via your own volition.
