The plugin system is nice.

Yeah I haven't seen many nice templates (besides this theme and a select few others) it seems if you don't want to fork over a lot of cash you're stuck with building a theme by scratch.
When I say templating system I mean that MyBB currently stores all templates within a database by default which is inefficient and makes it a pain to modify.
The thing I like about IPB, is that it's all pure XML, there's no extra resources you have to add. along with from what i've seen, manually editing things is quite a pain in the ass with mybb.
MyBB has a lot of pros but a the biggest con for me is templating. I cant really comment on IPB vs MyBB as I don't have enough experience with IPB to comment.
