Another option would be to involve the police.

Whilst that's a good option and I certainly agree, the police don't really care about mediocre thefts of this nature.

If It's one of their own (a police coworker or friend), they'd take a few extra steps In catching the thief. I can't speak for all police In all localities, but In my country, they simply turn a blind eye.
