It's a pretty simple equation- where's the weapon/handgun? The police shot him and the gun vanished? Despite the poor footage, there's no view of a handgun or anything representing a hand-held weapon. If the police followed protocol, they sure better find that gun.

Based on all this, I don't see any grounds as to why the police had to "shoot him dead".

In a use of deadly force situation one is trained to shoot until the threat is neutralized. Deadly force is justifiable homicide if the person using deadly force reasonably believes there is an immediate threat of death or severe bodily harm to self or others.
