I love the show, and there's definitely more to it than zombies. One of the tag lines for the newer seasons is "Fear the living" - because it's not just the dead you have to worry about 
It's a very interesting show. But, since you're not into zombies I'm still not sure. Give it a shot anyway, the first season is only 6 episodes long
