Ah I realize it was your opinion. And i didnt take it as offensive i just wasnt sure how you would define bulky. I by no means claim that vbulletin is a basic, lightweight script with a single purpose like some forum software out there... but between the major paid and open source software like phpbb, smf, invisionboard, etc (I wont add mybb as ive never touched the code or admin panel)... none of them i would consider lightweight in any of sense of the word. meanwhile i find vbulletin to be far more extensive and still scalable. Its good for forums with 100 users, or 100k users, or even 500k+ users. Its not like you hit 20k users, or 200k posts and suddenly server errors all over the place. as long as you have the hardware to support the software it will run quite smoothly. And while thats the same with all software, there are forums, and i believe phpbb comes to mind, at least in the past, that once you started getting to a certain point it just couldnt handle the amount of data. it was likely weak sql queries but ive dealt with a few phpbb databases that corrupted in the past.

But i will concede that the last 5 years or so ive only had a single vBulletin install active any where so my experience with these applications are outdated to say the least. Things can and do change in 5 years.

And like i also said, ive read a bit and followed the vB 5.x line and im quite hesitant about the future of the software. So dont take this as vB is the best it does have its issues, but as far as consistency goes ive got 13 years experience with the software its never really let me down.

The other factor is also cost. Not everyone wants to spend money on a license. That said dont use a nulled version of vBulletin. if you cant afford it go free/open source. A nulled version could have just a single line or two of code injected somewhere and your server/site is compromised. Its not worth the risk. And once you discover a compromise it is just a pain in the ass to track where it comes from. Avoid the issue from the start.

Oh and I will admit, the biggest downside to vBulletin is its theme/code. Making modifications or adjustments is like brain surgery. its not for the faint of heart and makes very little sense to any but the most experienced vb hacker. and i say vb hacker cause even if you are a php/sql coder... the code and database structure is just BLAH!!
