Not true. There is much more than applets. Never heard of Java EE? That is even more often used in business than Java SE. Almost all of the Java job advertisments are for enterprise applications (which is a bit sad imho).
Quote:Java Platform, Enterprise Edition or Java EE is Oracle's enterprise Java computing platform. The platform provides an API and runtime environment for developing and running enterprise software, including network and web services, and other large-scale, multi-tiered, scalable, reliable, and secure network applications. Java EE extends the Java Platform, Standard Edition (Java SE),[1] providing an API for object-relational mapping, distributed and multi-tier architectures, and web services. The platform incorporates a design based largely on modular components running on an application server. Software for Java EE is primarily developed in the Java programming language. The platform emphasizes Convention over configuration [2] and annotations for configuration. Optionally XML can be used to override annotations or to deviate from the platform defaults.
@dreamcoder: I can tell you only about Java. The Java basics are easy to learn. But getting into JavaEE is not. You should have some experience before you start getting into it. Most of the time you struggle with dependencies.
It was my bachelor thesis to integrate a reporting engine to a portal. It took about half a year to learn everything and finally to work and integrate all the frameworks we used (I worked 8 hours a day, but I had no experience in JavaEE when I started).
It is just my opinion, but I didn't like it at all. You just glue libraries together.
In case you want to look into it, here is a tutorial: http://docs.oracle.com/javaee/6/tutorial/doc/bnadr.html
