I've noticed that you said, that you are using vmware to run backtrack? Generally, these virtualization methods don't give you direct access to your WiFi adapter. You need a 3rd party USB adapter or run BackTrack directly (through LiveCD probably?). This way you might be able to get better results I also highly suggest using WiFite, it makes the whole cracking process so much easier (basically you just specify a network and it does rest of the work)
