a philsophical question 08-27-2011, 10:12 PM

I know this forum and other like it (Iassume there is others like it, I googled hacker community) will get people like me who have never hacked a thing. A lot of us show up because we've been 'hacked' and are looking for answers or revenge (see first thread) and you guys rightly geat us down like whack-a-mole or promptly ignor us, not letting us in.
But I intend to stay for a while and learn from you, I may never rise above class d, I may never learn what class d means. But I plan on being here a while even if it's just social and my personality is direct, so my question is direct, sorta. I just want to set it up so it's the last line in the OP.
In the movies you are portrayed as the nerd, obcessed one, et al in the basement or some other dedicated room with tons of computer equipment puzzled together from other machines. The charactor is either way cool or way uncool, but always dedicated to betting the machine and "the man".
But everything I see from Hollywood is 2 dimentional and incomplete. Which leads, finally to my question (s):
what does it mean to hack?
what is a hacker?
Is there really a black hat and white hat divide, and if so is it organized or just a label the media uses?
looking forward to answers
