What it does is it gives you extra features like owning a house and stuff like that. I think it works fine because then the game is just pay for cool features rather than pay for ingame currency or pay for cool items.

I dont know if I misunderstood your post or not, but I am pretty sure that you can own houses without being a patron, but you cannot claim the land.

As for the OP,
3 of my friends liked the game so much they bought the $150 package and are playing it as we speak
I will be trying it out when it is officially launched for everybody.
